This my land which is so diverse.
With so many faces that live on its earth.
Which so many claim is full of butter and ghee.
I sometimes wonder if they can at all see.
I form part of the privileged lot.
Who have lots to eat and spend on frocks.
So it becomes really easy to believe,
When somebody claims there is plenty to eat.
But as soon as I move out of the house,
I see kids with their skeleton tearing out.
Running about with no slippers on,
I wonder how it feels when their feet touch the ground.
Forget about butter or ghee,
I wonder if they even had enough dal to eat.
In despair they move from car to car,
Sticking their faces to the window’s that are ajar.
How could anyone after seeing these kids.
Have any belief in what he is told to believe.
That there is enough butter and ghee for all to eat.

yet seeing this has become like a part of our lives...most of would see it but barely give it a second thought...its like most of us have taken seeing half naked starved children on the roads for granted...its a part of the daily routine...
ReplyDeleteIn a world where De-sensitizing people has become the norm by all media and leadership. It is easy to ignore such realities. It is the people who have to chose to speak up and you have already begun.
ReplyDeleteThis piece is well written and I hope you continue...I have begun waiting for your posts.
cynic @ i do agree that we have been seeing this all our life, but what really frustates me is my own indifference towards them. i mean so many times when i am about to eat in a fancy place, righ outside i see beggars .. and then how many times have i gone and offered them food... leaves me wondering, weather i am only a symphathizer or have i really got it in me to do something, something small, but something for sure.
ReplyDeleteSurkhi @ thanks for the encouraging words, but i can't help but wonder are words enough without action ? and i think they aren't and i am lacking the latter ...
I agree words are never enough without action. But words are the beginning. No one lacks action, no matter how little your deed it still counts as action and at the end of the day...it is not about you or me...it is about those whose lives lack what our lives have and how we can help is all that matters. It may be by giving them food when you can, it can be by persistent political activism, either way the result never comes fast. Your test would be to act even though you know that victory may not be won in your own lifetime.
ReplyDeleteSurkhi @ i do agree that initially it would be words as being reflective of your thoughts that would be the beginning of any form of social responsibility one might be willing to take, and overtime words would transalate into action.
ReplyDeleteBut i have observed from people around me that many times people who speak those words do so only because it carries with an air of intellectual superiority, they really don't have any real conviction for the cause they speak. so many times i have seen them behave in a manner which contradicts their words. i therefore can't help but wonder about my own convictions..
but it could be that my experiences are but exceptions, in which case i would be really happy .. but i at present doubt if that is the case
Like you, I was once very concerned about others and their intellectual words, but I soon began to work for what I believed in. What path you chose should not be dependent on how many have done it before and failed, succeeded or just become hypocrits. If you think you will become like them, I can only say don't berate yourself. Also, don't hide behind excuses that others use.
ReplyDeleteWhen you really want to study design, you read things that will help, you search out desingers who have succeeded even though there will be many "posers" you ignore the wrong and follow the ones who designed amazing things and take inspiration from them.
I feel the same applies to doing something for your own kind. Why not take inspiration from those who have made a difference. It need not be a big difference, but it is a lot.
Those who question whether action should/should not be taken on something are not asking the right question. But if you feel you can't take action and make a difference, no one will judge you. I will only say, it is never to late and you do it not because intellectuals do/don't do, but because that is what is the need of the times.
huu ... i think you are right... thank you : - )
ReplyDeletePlease don't say thank you...its not like i'm doing you a favor...this is a discussion and we can still discuss more :)
